Final spurt for the backup_festival 2010: still two weeks until the festival begins!
15.04.2010

1.200 films sent from all over the world

The 12th backup_festival counts more than 1.200 films there were sent in by film artists from all over the world.
The numerous films for the backup.award and backup.clip.award have been watched and selected by the backup.team and were assembled into an exceptional program.

The opening of the festival on may 6th is coming closer. In this moment the team is working with a maximal output to enable a perfect program for the four days of the festival.
Some events can already be published: In the backup.connect area the chargé de programme for the ARTE channel (especially the documentation area), Prof. Peter Gottschalk, will give a lecture. Even the well-known Scout VJs announced their presence during the festival.

First backup will offer a program for the pupils in Weimar. The workshop.schools consists of film, courses and studio visits and is directly focused on the new media recruits. For the film makers the backup_festival offers professional workshops. These are practical seminars concerning image-light-and sound techniques, but also art projects.
Established artists such as Tina Tonlage and Widemusic as well as Camelot Broadcasting Service are supporting the young film makers during their work.

The panel of judges consists of film-and music experts, award-winning artists and directors. Apart from the central program, the after show also presents interesting opportunities, for example the appearance of Nation Records Chicago artists (Traxx and Tiny) and Klinke auf Cinch. The team is optimistic that the backup_festival 2010 will once again enrich the cultural life of Weimar.

The accreditations for the backup.festival 2010 are available on www.backup-festival.de.

News from the backup_festival

Shortfilm makers watch out - Contributions for the backup_festival 2010 can still be submitted until 1st of March

The preparations for the backup_festival 2010, which takes place in Weimar from 6th - 9th May, have been running for five months now. This year, backup will run with a new profile: For the first time it will be a festival by students for students.

The backup.team is currently working at full blast and is therefore able to draw a pleasant interim balance: numerous submissions for the backup.award and the backup.clip.award have been recorded. Their variety and origin are astonishing: The submissions originate not only from Germany, European and English-speaking countries, but also from Armenia, Singapore, Iran, Romania, Taiwan and the Philippines.

backup has started over this year with mostly new staff. More than 80 students in different work groups are involved in the organisation of the backup_festival 2010, as backup is not only one of the most important festivals for innovative cinema, but also part of a course at the Bauhaus University Weimar.

For the organisation of the backup_festival the students use their contacts with media and design schools from all over the world. If nothing else, a network of film makers from the commercial as well as the academical sector is the secret of the success of backup and a basis for the students' professional advancement that should not be underestimated.

This interim balance encourages the backup.team's aims, and confirms the comprehension of the backup_festival as a meeting of the present day media industry, and a place of intercultural networking.

Since January 2010, the tender circulates worldwide electronically and through posters and letters. The backup_festival continues to call for submissions, deadline is the 1st of March 2010. The registration forms for the backup.clip.award and the backup.award are available for download on www.backup-festival.de .

Preparations for the 12th backup_festival have started
Dec. 2009
The preparations for the next backup_festival, the international short film festival, have now started with the open tenders for the competitions. Young filmmakers from around the world are able to present their work in Weimar from 6th to 9th May 2010.

For the 12th time the backup_festival will offer space for an inspiring encounter of representatives of the young media community and for the interaction and exchange between filmmakers, experts, media industry and the audience.
As is tradition, the former tramway depot will provide the location for our festival for four days.
Besides the Bauhaus University the event is hosted by the Bauhaus Institute of Film (BFI).

This year, the backup_festival focuses on two competitions: the backup.award and the backup.clip.award. The backup.award concentrates on the interaction of different approaches and techniques and their influence on the narrative structure, production and distribution. The backup.clip.award refers to music videos that create an extraordinary symbiosis of film and music by means of different techniques and media.

The entry deadline for both competitions is the 1st of March 2010. The open tenders for the 12th backup_festival will be carried out internationally at art schools, academies of arts, media and design schools, colleges of higher education and universities. backup stands in contrast to already established film contests addressed to film schools only. Exactly for that reason, for the first time in the 12th year of backup, only contributions by students and alumni from the previously mentioned schools will compete.

Film- and music video makers should send their contributions with all corresponding documents to the following address until the 1st March 2010:

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar
Fakultät Medien
Bauhausstraße 15
99423 Weimar
